In the modern day business world, one of the only certainties is change. Recent fluctuations in gas prices, property values, and unemployment is proof positive that change is inevitable, and the marketplace we are currently doing business in may not be stable for a while.
How can you keep your business strong in times of inconsistency? What can you do to emerge as a strong leader despite the pressure?
Get Real: Define the situation in uncompromisingly clear terms for yourself and the people around you. In other words, face reality. Before you react, make sure you have all the facts. Don’t waste time and emotion on things that aren’t real. You can identify false reality by paying attention to what you and others think and say (i.e. “What if,” “If only,” I should have”).
Focus on the Big Picture: Give yourself and those you lead a bold and inspirational vision that is much larger than the actual task. People want to feel part of something bigger than their selves. Creating a vision gives work an importance and a value. People will want to join the team if they believe your leadership can lead them to an important destination.
Hold Yourself Accountable: Take responsibility for your actions and leadership. If you caused a problem, admit it immediately, apologize for it, and acknowledge your role in finding a solution. Setting this example will motivate others on your team to follow the “If it’s to be it’s up to me” mentality.
Be Consistent: Stick with something through good times and bad. When faced with what seems like a daunting task, focus on one small action at a time that moves you forward.
Adopt a “Yes” Attitude: Take what you do seriously but don’t take yourself seriously. Having fun and enjoying your work makes friends, co-workers, employees, and clients want to be part of the energy. Develop a “yes” attitude by listening to motivational music, reading inspirational books, learning new languages and ideas, and avoiding negative media.
